"Moved into a 1950s house in Duckpond — had 3 Russwin mortise locks nobody else in Gainesville would touch. Keeper rekeyed all 3 plus a modern Schlage on the back door, matched them to one key, $220 total. Clean work."
Rekeying vs replacing locks — the honest comparison
If you just moved into a house in Gainesville, had a roommate move out, lost a key, or want to disable old keys for any reason, you have two options. Both work. One is 5x cheaper.
Option A: Replace the lock entirely
Buy a new deadbolt (Kwikset $45, Schlage $65, Baldwin $140, Emtek $220), remove the old one, install the new. New keys included because new lock. Takes 20–30 min per door. Cost: $85–$280 per door depending on hardware you pick.
Option B: Rekey the existing lock
Open the cylinder, remove the old pin stack, install a new pin stack keyed to your choice. Original hardware stays. Original keys no longer work; new keys do. Takes 10–15 min per door. Cost: $40–$80 per door.
Same security either way — the lock quality doesn't change, only the pins. Most Gainesville homes have Kwikset or Schlage deadbolts in good shape; rekeying is the clear winner. Replacement only makes sense if (a) the existing lock is already failing (sticky, won't turn with the key), (b) you're upgrading to higher security (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock), or (c) you want a smart lock.
A typical 3-door Gainesville house (front, back/garage, side) costs $135–$180 to rekey. The same house to replace costs $225–$600. We'll tell you honestly on the phone which makes sense for your situation.
